In Singapore, buyers of a small car currently have to pay almost $100,000 USD for the government license, according to data from the latest auctions.

Anyone who wants to own a car in the city-state of Singapore needs a so-called Certificate of Entitlement (COE). These certificates are auctioned off regularly, and their prices have risen sharply in recent years. Following the most recent auctions, the price for the small-car category – vehicles with an engine displacement below 1.6 liters – now stands at around $99,000 USD, according to market data. This brings the license for a small car closer than ever to the $100,000 mark.

Price increase compared to 2023

Back in October 2023, certificates for larger cars had already surpassed the $100,000 USD mark, while those for small cars were still around $77,500 at the time. The renewed increase makes clear just how much the cost of car ownership in the city-state has grown in recent years. Anyone buying a small car today must pay almost as much for the license alone as many people elsewhere pay for an entire car.
