Sinner Defends Wimbledon Title and Celebrates Fifth Grand Slam Triumph

Comeback After the Heat Collapse in Paris

Following Paris, Sinner skipped the grass-court preparatory tournaments and instead prepared specifically for higher temperatures in Monaco. At this year's unusually hot conditions in Wimbledon, this evidently paid off. His coach Darren Cahill explained: "Er hat ein einmaliges Talent, das ihm kein Coach beibringen kann. With the triumph, the Italian moved closer to the top of the history books. Since his first Masters 1000 crown, he has won all nine tournaments of that category within three years – a feat achieved before him only by Novak Djokovic, who needed twelve years to do so. Adriano Panatta, the last Italian Grand Slam champion before Sinner (French Open 1976), believes his compatriot could also match Djokovic's record of 24 major titles.

Record Chase and Italian Tennis History

In the final, Sinner was cheered on by the British fans, prompting TV expert Michael Stich, who was present, to remark skeptically: "Ob das gut geht". The former Wimbledon champion watched the proceedings on screen. Yet the atmosphere seemed to barely affect Sinner. "Ihr wisst gar nicht, wie viel mir dieser Erfolg bedeutet", he said after converting match point.

Zverev Fights as a Gracious Loser

Finalist Alexander Zverev proved himself a gracious loser afterwards. "Er ist immer noch der beste Spieler der Welt", said the 29-year-old German, who climbed to number two in the world rankings after Wimbledon. "Ich habe sie dieses Jahr zwar nicht geschlagen, aber ich habe sie bis an ihre Grenzen gebracht", explained Zverev, who sees himself as the "third among them" of the top stars. "Es gab immer so eine Art Diskussion darüber, wer der Dritte sein würde, die Suche nach dem Dritten. His French Open triumph in June had temporarily interrupted the winning streak of Sinner and Alcaraz.

Despite the defeat, Zverev received a respectful comment from the winner: "Er macht große Fortschritte. Sein Spiel wird immer besser", said Sinner about his opponent, the Olympic champion from Tokyo. Sinner also stressed: "Ich spiele nicht wegen der Rekorde Tennis. Ich spiele, um immer besser zu werden, um Spaß zu haben, um meine eigene Geschichte zu schreiben. Für die Fans, für mein Team und meine Familie." Djokovic and Alcaraz also sent congratulations; the latter was absent due to injury – he had not competed at either the French Open or Wimbledon.

Statistics of Dominance

Even before the final, Sinner had lowered expectations. "Es ist kein Versagen, wenn du ein Grand-Slam-Turnier nicht gewinnst", he explained. "Es wäre heute auch ein sehr, sehr guter Tag gewesen, wenn ich verloren hätte." The statistics underscore his current dominance: since October 2025, he has lost only three matches, against Francisco Cerundolo, Jakub Mensik, and Novak Djokovic in Melbourne.

In the world rankings, Sinner further extended his lead; Carlos Alcaraz now trails him by 5,290 points. Sinner's fifth Grand Slam title brings him to two fewer victories than the Spanish rival, who will, however, be absent at the upcoming hard-court tournaments.

Zverev remained combative: "Wenn ich also näher an sie herankomme, wenn ich mit ihnen um die großen Turniere konkurrieren und sie gewinnen kann, wäre das großartig", he said with an eye on the upcoming tournaments.

The mutual respect was palpable on both sides – and the tennis world looks back on a final that, despite the clear set score, lasted more than three and a half hours.
