Alexander Zverev will contest the Wimbledon final against world number one Jannik Sinner on Sunday (5:00 p.m.) and can write tennis history with a win as the first German men's champion at the grass-court classic since Michael Stich 35 years ago.
Situation ahead of the final
For the Hamburg native, it is his first final at Wimbledon and the first for a German player in the men's singles since Boris Becker in 1995. Five weeks after his first Grand Slam triumph at the French Open in Paris, Zverev has the chance to complete the rare double of Paris and London. "Ich will mehr", said the 29-year-old ahead of the final and announced his intention to land the next historic coup.
However, the opponent is no favorite opponent of the German. Since the US Open 2023, the statistics have not listed a single Zverev win over Sinner. Overall, the head-to-head stands at 10:4 in favor of the South Tyrolean. Zverev has lost all of the most recent nine matches against the current world's best tennis player, six of them without winning a set. "Es wird sehr, sehr schwer", Zverev conceded.
Sinner's dominance and Zverev's losing streak
Sinner travels to London with the self-confidence of a defending champion. In the semifinal, the world number one showed no weakness whatsoever in his 6:4, 6:4, 6:4 victory over Grand Slam record holder Novak Djokovic and handled the task with authority. "In der Zwischenzeit hat er ein Grand Slam gewonnen, was ihm viel Selbstvertrauen gab", said the four-time Grand Slam champion about Zverev. "Wir können hier sehen, auf welchem Niveau er spielt."
