Dense smoke from wildfires in Canada and Minnesota reached the northeastern US on Thursday, pushing air quality in cities such as Chicago, Detroit and New York to values between "very unhealthy" and "hazardous."

The Chicago region was hardest hit according to official measurements. In the Chicago region, air quality was classified as ranging from "very unhealthy" to "hazardous." Authorities responded, among other measures, by closing the city's beaches, even though many people sought relief there amid high temperatures. The measure was reportedly justified by extremely high particulate matter levels.
