Officers from the Nickelsdorf police inspection seized 100,960 cigarettes from Moldova at the end of May during a check at the Nickelsdorf border crossing (District of Neusiedl am See) in a small transporter with French license plates. The cigarettes were being transported in a hidden freezer in the cargo area.

According to a press release from the tax office, published on Thursday, the vehicle checked was a Mercedes Sprinter with French registration that had come across the border from Hungary. During a closer inspection of the cargo area, the intervening officers noticed the freezer in which the smuggled goods were hidden. "In the subsequent more detailed inspection, the officers found a total of 100,960 cigarettes of various brands originating from Moldova," the statement said.
