Austrian police have seized a shipment of marijuana allegedly smuggled in from Spain with an estimated value of around two million euros and arrested several suspects in a strike against organized drug crime.
According to the Federal Criminal Police Office, the successful operation traces back to a tip from Spain indicating an imminent transport to Austria. The day after the tip, investigators monitored a truck at the Spielfeld border crossing that was supposed to bring the alleged drug cargo into Austria. The officers surveilled the vehicle until the planned drop-off location in Traiskirchen in Lower Austria.
During the raid in Traiskirchen, the officers seized a larger quantity of marijuana whose black-market value is estimated at around two million euros. In the course of the subsequent investigation, arrests were also made in Vienna and Lower Austria in the following days. Suspects were taken to St. Pölten prison, according to investigative sources.
