Lee Jae-myung has proposed talks to North Korea on a peaceful future for the Korean Peninsula, as a joint military exercise with the United States is set to begin next week.

Speaking to the press in Seoul on Saturday, Lee Jae-myung said his government did not want to close the door on talks with North Korea on normalizing relations. He called on the leadership in Pyongyang to consider the offer of peaceful coexistence and pointed to South Korea's readiness to discuss economic cooperation and security guarantees.

The move comes amid a period of tense relations between the two countries. In recent months, North Korea has repeatedly carried out missile tests and advanced its nuclear weapons program. Seoul views this as a continued threat to its security and has stepped up its defense efforts, including through closer coordination with the United States and Japan.
