Kim Jong Un Demands Rapid Expansion of North Korea's Nuclear Arsenal

Kim's Sister Sets Conditions for Washington

Kim Yo Jong, Kim Jong Un's sister, had described the personal relationship between the leaders of the two countries as "not bad" on July 29. At the same time, she made a condition for a meeting with the US President clear: the US must accept the reality of North Korea's nuclear weapons arsenal. This effectively formulated a prerequisite that contradicts Washington's previous demands.

Washington hopes to persuade North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons. US President Donald Trump had announced a diplomatic offensive towards Kim Jong Un upon his return to the White House in 2025. At the same time, the US government continues to demand the complete, verifiable, and irreversible abandonment of North Korea's nuclear weapons arsenal. There is no official confirmation of any rapprochement between the two sides so far.

Decades of Confrontation

John Bolton, former National Security Advisor, had previously called for the handover of all North Korean nuclear weapons. Under President Joe Biden, there had been attempts at diplomatic rapprochement, but the issue was not a high priority in Washington. Even under President Barack Obama, a policy of "strategic patience" with sanctions had isolated North Korea internationally.

The history of confrontation dates back decades. North Korea and the US-led forces fought a war from 1950 to 1953, which ended in an armistice. The two states have never signed a formal peace treaty, nor do they have diplomatic relations. Since its division along the 38th parallel after World War II, the Korean Peninsula has been one of the most militarized regions in the world.

Singapore Summit Without Tangible Results

According to its own statements, North Korea conducted six nuclear tests between 2006 and 2017. In 2017, the country successfully tested new intercontinental missiles that could theoretically reach the US mainland. Economic sanctions against Pyongyang were significantly tightened in 2016 and 2017. For 20 years, North Korea has been subject to strict UN sanctions due to its nuclear weapons program.

The first historic summit between a US and a North Korean head of state took place in Singapore on June 12, 2018. The joint declaration of Singapore contained four core points, including a commitment to build new relations between the two countries. However, the declaration had no tangible consequences for the nuclear weapons program.

The Kim dynasty has ruled the northern part of the Korean Peninsula since the end of World War II. Tensions between Pyongyang and Washington have determined the security situation in East Asia for decades. With the new demand for an "exponential" expansion of capacities, pressure is mounting on diplomatic channels, which have largely been dormant since the Singapore summit.

International observers interpret the latest statements as a signal that Pyongyang is continuing its nuclear rearmament regardless of sanctions and new US diplomacy. North Korea's refusal to negotiate its nuclear weapons program further limits the scope for a diplomatic solution. The situation on the Korean Peninsula thus remains tense.
