The SPD is pushing to gradually scale back internal border controls in Germany as soon as the European asylum reform GEAS comes into force on Friday; the Union and Federal Interior Minister Dobrindt, however, consider an immediate reduction premature.
Sebastian Fiedler, the interior policy spokesperson of the SPD parliamentary group in the Bundestag, spoke out ahead of the entry into force of the European asylum reform in favor of an end to stationary border checks at Germany's internal borders. "I am advocating for gradually scaling back border checks after 12 June," Fiedler told the Mediengruppe Bayern. He pointed to the coalition agreement, which provides for such a step as soon as the new rules take effect.
