The dispute over advance maintenance payments is escalating within the black-red coalition: SPD General Secretary Tim Klüssendorf has called on Federal Family Minister Karin Prien (CDU) to withdraw her proposal to cut the benefit for single parents.

Specifically, Prien plans to pay advance maintenance only up to a child's 16th birthday instead of their 18th in the future. The savings plans are justified by the austerity requirements in the federal budget. The advance maintenance payment is a state benefit that kicks in when the parent obliged to pay maintenance cannot pay.
