Berlin, April 27, 2026 SPD leader Bas criticizes government economic strategy SPD leader Bärbel Bas has accused the federal government of failing to develop a clear strategy for the future of Germany’s economy, particularly for key industries like chemicals, automotive, and steel.

Lack of Clear Economic Plan

Bas, the chairwoman of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), emphasized the urgent need for a coherent economic strategy to secure Germany’s industrial future. She criticized the government for not identifying which industries and regions should be prioritized for investment and innovation.

"The government needs to identify which industries and areas to strengthen and provide funding for innovations to secure their locations," Bas stated. She stressed that without a clear plan, workers in critical sectors like chemicals, automotive, and steel would face uncertainty.

The responsibility for crafting such a strategy, Bas noted, lies with the Ministry of Economy, currently led by Katherina Reiche. Bas’s remarks underscore growing tensions within the coalition government over economic policy, particularly as Germany faces increasing global competition and the need for industrial transformation.

Calls for European Strength and Independence

Bas also highlighted the importance of reducing Germany’s dependence on other countries and strengthening Europe’s economic resilience. She argued that greater autonomy is essential for long-term stability.
