A working group within the SPD has called for a special party convention in the autumn, making its dissatisfaction with the party leadership of Bärbel Bas and Lars Klingbeil abundantly clear.
According to information from Der Spiegel, the initiative comes from the ranks of the party's working groups. Mehria Ashuftah and Özdemir, who appear as working group chairs, have submitted a corresponding motion, according to the report. This increases the pressure on the incumbent SPD leadership, which is already facing declining approval ratings.
Background of the Demand
The background to the push is, according to the applicants' account, the current polling numbers. Ashuftah and Özdemir told Der Spiegel in so many words: "Diese Irritation führt dazu, dass die Menschen die SPD nicht mehr als politische Option wahrnehmen, was sich in den aktuellen Umfragen erschreckend deutlich niederschlägt". The two thus see a fundamental crisis of confidence at the grassroots level.
