FC St. Pauli was eliminated from the DFB-Pokal by third-tier club Rot-Weiß Essen, losing 0-2 and exiting the competition in the first round.
FC St. Pauli suffered a major disappointment in the DFB-Pokal on Saturday. The Hamburg side lost 0-2 to third-tier club Rot-Weiß Essen and missed out on qualification for the second round of the cup competition. Coach Marcel Rapp’s team looked particularly uninspired and ineffective in the first half.
St. Pauli was the clear favorite even before kickoff, but little of that was evident on the pitch. Essen defended compactly and passionately while repeatedly posing a threat in attack. The Hamburg side struggled to find a way through the well-organized defense of the third-tier club.
