British Prime Minister Keir Starmer apologised on 02.07.2026 in the House of Commons in London, on behalf of the state, to the mothers and children who were forcibly placed for adoption in England and Wales between 1949 and 1976.

Background to the forced adoptions

Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke in the British Parliament, the House of Commons, of a "Schandfleck in unserer Geschichte" and asked the affected women and children for forgiveness. According to the news agency PA, it is the first state apology for the practice of forced adoptions in England and Wales.
