At least 17 statutory health insurers and Associations of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KV) have suffered confirmed losses of at least 170 million euros through misguided investments in real estate funds, according to joint research by NDR, WDR, and Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ).

Background: Verius Funds and the Investments

According to the three media outlets, the confirmed investments add up to at least 170 million euros, although the actual total could be higher. According to information from financial circles, a total of 28 health insurers and KVs indirectly channeled money into the Verius funds; the misguided investments could therefore total more than 500 million euros. The funds invested in risky real estate deals through a complicated structure and later ran into trouble.
