Following the withdrawal of Kai Wegner as the party's lead candidate, Berlin's Finance Senator Stefan Evers is to lead the CDU into the House of Representatives election on September 20.

The Berlin CDU is responding to the surprising withdrawal of its previous lead candidate Kai Wegner by fielding a successor. As reported by the Deutsche Presse-Agentur, the CDU district chairpersons proposed on Friday evening that Finance Senator Stefan Evers be nominated as the new lead candidate. The party's state executive board intends to make a final decision on Monday, with approval widely expected.

Wegner announced his withdrawal on Friday afternoon. The background was sustained criticism of his crisis management during a major power outage in Berlin at the beginning of the year. He had been accused of making contradictory statements during the incident. Formally, the CDU is not obliged to name a new lead candidate, but according to party circles, such a step carries significant symbolic weight.
