Ried, 25 June 2026
SV Ried have signed central midfielder Stefan Schwab, bringing the 35-year-old back to the Austrian Bundesliga after stints in Greece and Germany.
The club from the Innviertel region confirmed the move on Thursday, describing Schwab as an immediate reinforcement for the squad. Schwab left Austrian football in 2020, joining Greek club PAOK Thessaloniki, where he spent five seasons before moving to Germany. "Nach sechs Jahren im Ausland, fünf davon in Griechenland und eines in Deutschland, ist es für mich jetzt der richtige Schritt, in die österreichische Bundesliga zurückzukehren," Schwab said.
Schwab made his name at Rapid, where he wore the captain's armband and was widely regarded as one of the team's senior leaders. Born in Saalfelden, he developed into one of the Austrian top flight's most recognisable midfielders before his departure abroad. His return marks one of the more high-profile moves of Ried's close-season recruitment drive.
