A familiar face in Austrian football

In his most recent campaign, Schwab was under contract with Holstein Kiel in Germany's second division. Ried said his experience at that level, combined with his years at PAOK, made him an attractive option as they looked to add know-how to their squad. The midfielder is expected to slot straight into Ried's first-team plans for the new season.

Schwab has framed the move as an opportunity rather than a final chapter. "Ich bin 35 Jahre alt und möchte beweisen, dass ich in einer guten Verfassung bin und auf diesem hohen Niveau eine gute Rolle spielen kann," he said. He added: "Ich will der Mannschaft helfen, eine gute und erfolgreiche Saison zu spielen."

Fiala sets out the remit

On the club side, Wolfgang Fiala, Geschäftsführer Sport at SV Ried, said the signing was the product of a deliberate search for a stability factor following several departures. "Wir wollten nach den Abgängen unbedingt einen weiteren Stabilitätsfaktor im Kader haben, den wir mit Stefan Schwab gefunden haben," Fiala said.

Fiala outlined a specific on-pitch remit for the new signing, pointing to set-piece responsibility as well as a broader creative role. "Er wird bei uns im Spiel eine strategische Rolle im Spiel mit dem Ball einnehmen und uns auch bei Standards helfen," Fiala explained. He also stressed a mentoring dimension to the deal.

Mentoring role for the younger squad

Ried see the experienced midfielder as someone who can support the development of their younger squad members. "Zudem soll er unsere jungen Spieler unterstützen," Fiala noted, framing Schwab not just as a starter but as a leader inside the dressing room. The club has not disclosed the length or financial terms of the contract.

The signing comes at a time when several Austrian clubs have turned to returning players with international experience to strengthen their squads ahead of the new season. For Ried, based in the Innviertel, the addition of a player of Schwab's profile is intended to signal ambition while also providing practical know-how on the pitch and in the dressing room.

Schwab's arrival closes a six-year chapter abroad and returns him to a league where he previously established himself as a leader. With the Bundesliga season approaching, Ried are betting that his experience in Thessaloniki and at Holstein Kiel will translate quickly into performances in the Austrian top flight.
