Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker (ÖVP) announced at a meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Salzburg that, starting in 2027, rejected asylum seekers are to be deported to so-called Return Hubs outside the EU. Both countries want to make use of the new EU Return Regulation, which the European Parliament adopted in June 2026.

Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker (ÖVP), together with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, announced on Monday in Salzburg that, starting in 2027, rejected asylum seekers would be deported to so-called "Return Hubs" outside the EU.

Joint Course in Migration Policy

Both heads of government presented their joint approach to migration policy at a press conference following their meeting. "Jene, die ohne Aufenthaltsrecht hier sind, werden außer Landes gebracht," Stocker said. Greece also wanted to make use of the possibility of creating return centers, the Chancellor added.
