Vienna, 27 May 2026

The trial of former FPÖ leader and Vice-Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache began on Wednesday at the Vienna Regional Court, where he faces charges of breach of trust related to a party-financed life insurance policy.

Strache appeared slightly late to the hearing, which initially deals exclusively with the 'life insurance' case. He and a co-defendant are charged with breach of trust (Untreue).

The Vienna FPÖ took out a life and endowment insurance policy for its then-chairman Strache in 2007 for a term of ten years. A total of 940,000 euros was paid into the policy.
