SKAGEN, Denmark — May 2, 2026 Beluga whale Timmy released into North Sea after rescue
A beluga whale named Timmy was released into the North Sea early Sunday morning after being stranded multiple times along Germany’s Baltic coast, marking the culmination of a weeks-long rescue effort.
Rescue and Release Operation
The whale, estimated to be between four and six years old, was transported on a barge and released approximately 70 kilometers from the Danish town of Skagen in the Skagerrak strait at around 9:00 AM. Jens Schwarck, a member of the private initiative overseeing the transport, confirmed the details to the German Press Agency.
Timmy had spent roughly 60 days in the Baltic Sea, frequently lingering in shallow waters before being guided onto the barge near the island of Poel on Tuesday. The operation required careful coordination to ensure the whale’s safe transit toward deeper, more suitable habitats in the North Sea.
