Brussels, 12 June 2026

Stricter European Union asylum rules took effect at midnight, introducing faster border procedures and a new solidarity mechanism as part of the reformed Common European Asylum System (CEAS).

The reform, the culmination of years of negotiation among EU member states, is intended to relieve pressure on national asylum systems, particularly in countries on the bloc's external borders. Faster border procedures are designed to be used especially for applicants with low prospects of receiving protection, with a maximum duration of twelve weeks. EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner said of the entry into force: "Geas stärke das Vertrauen zwischen den Mitgliedstaaten und verschaffe Europa mehr Kontrolle."
