Students managing their own household spent an average of 54 percent of their disposable household income on housing costs last year, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office on the basis of the 2025 EU-SILC survey.
High Burden Compared to the Overall Population
Housing costs include rent or mortgage payments as well as utilities and other housing-related expenses. Those who live exclusively with other students or trainees spend 49 percent. Students living alone spend as much as 56 percent on housing, according to the report.
By comparison: Among the overall population, the corresponding share is 24 percent – less than half as high. In the overall population, only eleven percent are considered overburdened by housing costs according to Eurostat's definition.
