A study involving the University of Augsburg, the University of Milano-Bicocca, and Spanish partners shows that social media do not uniformly worsen adolescents' academic performance; instead, their effects vary depending on the way the platforms are used.
At the heart of the investigation is the question of how social media use affects the academic performance of young people. The authors conclude that blanket warnings about platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, or Snapchat do not do justice to the complexity of the issue. Instead, greater attention needs to be paid to how, for how long, and in what context young people use social media.
