A summary study of more than 200 studies, published on Thursday in the specialist journal "BMJ," concludes that the most effective GLP-1 drugs for weight loss also cause the most side effects and treatment discontinuations.
The authors of the review study stated: „Die größten Vorteile sind in der Regel mit mehr Nebenwirkungen, Einschränkungen für die Patienten und Behandlungsabbrüchen verbunden". This confirms a fundamental pattern in pharmacology: stronger effects often come with a higher burden for those being treated. The study authors evaluated more than 200 studies on treatments with so-called GLP-1 antagonists.
GLP-1 antagonists, often referred to as weight-loss injections, were originally developed to treat diabetes and are now also used for weight reduction. Their use has expanded significantly in recent years, raising anew the question of costs, benefits, and risks.
What are GLP-1 antagonists?
According to the study, the two most effective drugs lead to a weight loss of about 15 percent. One of them is tirzepatide, marketed by the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly as the weight-loss injection Mounjaro. The other, the authors say, is the drug cagrisema, currently being developed by the competitor Novo Nordisk, which combines the active ingredients semaglutide and cagrilintide.
