The tablet is aimed at adults with a body mass index that is medically classified as requiring treatment. Self-administered use for the sole purpose of weight reduction is not intended. Doctors check possible contraindications such as certain gastrointestinal diseases before prescribing.

As with the injection, side effects can occur, particularly nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Professional societies recommend combining the treatment with nutritional counseling and exercise, as semaglutid alone does not replace a lifestyle change.

Nina Meyer, an endocrinologist at Charité, emphasized beforehand that the tablet is not equally suitable for all patient groups. The pharmacists' organization ABDA pointed out that prescribing doctors and dispensing pharmacies share responsibility for safe use. Association head Thomas Preis called for structured counseling in pharmacies to educate patients about effects, side effects, and instructions for use.

In parallel with the market launch, Stiftung Warentest advised seeking thorough medical advice before starting therapy and calibrating expectations realistically. The active ingredient can lower weight, but does not replace a lasting adjustment of eating and exercise habits.

Market observers assume that the oral version will change the market for prescription weight-loss medications in Germany. Concrete sales figures were initially not available. The manufacturer points to globally growing demand for GLP-1 receptor agonists, which include semaglutid.

For the coming months, several medical professional societies announced updated guidelines intended to regulate the use of oral GLP-1 preparations in obesity therapy. Until then, practitioners are guided by the previous recommendations for the injection form.

It remains unclear how strongly demand for the tablet will exceed that for the weight-loss injection. Observers expect that some of the patients who reject the injection out of fear of needles will switch to the tablet.

Overall, experts assess the introduction as a useful addition to the therapeutic arsenal against obesity, but emphasize that drug therapy should always be embedded in an overall concept of education, nutrition, exercise, and behavioral change.
