A tablet containing the active ingredient semaglutide for weight reduction has recently become available in German pharmacies and is considered an oral alternative to the previous weight-loss injection.
With the market launch of the oral version of semaglutide, the range of medications for weight reduction in Germany is expanding. Until now, the active ingredient was primarily known as a weekly injection, the so-called weight-loss injection. The tablet is aimed at patients who prefer a non-injectable form of administration.
Hans Hauner, Director of the Else Kröner Fresenius Center for Nutritional Medicine at the Technical University of Munich, explained the pharmacological background of the new dosage form. „The tablet dose is significantly higher than the injection dose because the stomach and small intestine absorb only a small fraction of the active ingredient“, he said to justify the higher dosage. This is intended to compensate for the lower bioavailability compared with the injection.
