Men experience the sudden drop in performance known as "Hitting the Wall" in marathons roughly twice as often as women, according to a new analysis by researchers led by Swiss scientist Beat Knechtle in the journal "Scientific Reports."
Data basis: More than 850,000 running times from Berlin
For the study, the team around Knechtle, who conducts research together with colleagues from Brazil, analyzed more than 850,000 running times for the 42-kilometer distance at the Berlin Marathon from the years 1999 to 2025. 76 percent of the runners considered were male, and more than half were between the ages of 35 and 49. Overall, the men completed the marathon on average faster (in 4 hours and 2 minutes) than the women (4 hours and 29 minutes).
