The 19-year-old Canadian Summer McIntosh set a women's world record in the 200m butterfly at the Pan-Pacific Championship trials in Montreal, erasing the last remaining best performance from the era of full-body suits.
McIntosh swam the 200 metres butterfly in 2:01.65 minutes, faster than any woman before her in the discipline. The previous mark had been held by the Chinese swimmer Liu Zige with 2:01.81 minutes, set at the height of the so-called full-body suit era. With her swim, McIntosh toppled the last remaining women's world record from that period, when high-tech swimsuits had pushed the performances of many athletes upward.

The Canadian, already a multiple Olympic champion, was deeply moved after the race. "This just means everything to me, and I'm completely overwhelmed," McIntosh said. She had considered this record unattainable as a child, she further explained: "Growing up, this was the only world record I thought I would never break, and to do it in front of a home crowd is something very special."
