Summer Weather in Germany: Sunshine in the West and South, Thunderstorms in the North and Northeast

According to the German Weather Service, the high temperatures range between 25 and 35 degrees. The highest values are expected along the Rhine. "High temperatures 25 to 35 degrees, with the highest values along the Rhine," it says. Along the coasts it will remain somewhat cooler.

Already in the morning, a temperature gradient from north to south is evident: "Highs from north to south 21 to 36 degrees". In many places, temperatures will thus climb above the 30-degree mark. It will be especially hot in the southwest, where values can reach "up to 35 degrees".

High Forest Fire Danger

The ongoing drought is currently causing an increased risk of forest fires. "Due to the ongoing drought, there is a high forest fire risk especially in the south and in the center of the country," the weather experts warn.

In some regions, the fourth of five warning levels already applies. In the Palatinate, for instance, the second-highest warning level from the weather service is in effect. Residents in the affected areas should stay up to date on current warnings.

According to the forecast, Tuesday will initially bring partly cloudy or sunny and dry weather to the north and northeast. During the course of the day, isolated thunderstorms are possible there as well. In the rest of the country, it will remain cloudy.

Tips for Hot Days

The uneven distribution of sunshine and thunderstorms is typical of midsummer weather patterns, where moist-warm air meets dry-hot air masses. While the west and south are under high-pressure influence, the proximity to low-pressure systems over the north causes the increased tendency for thunderstorms.

For the coming days, the weather services recommend drinking enough fluids and protecting oneself from the intense midday sun. In regions with an increased risk of forest fires, extra attention should also be paid to open fires.

Overall, the weather situation will remain summery warm. There is no cooling in sight for the time being – on the contrary: temperatures could continue to rise in the coming days, particularly in the southwest and along the Rhine.
