A suspected arson attack on a distribution box along the railway line between Hamburg and Cuxhaven interrupted train traffic in Lower Saxony overnight into Tuesday and affected thousands of passengers.

According to police, a witness reported seeing flames at a technical building at a level crossing around 1:15 a.m. When the first emergency services arrived, that fire had nearly gone out – but a distribution box was burning 50 meters away. Firefighters extinguished the blaze. The police said a distribution box had burned overnight in Neu Wulmstorf, Lower Saxony.

A Deutsche Bahn spokesperson said that train services on the section between Hamburg-Neugraben, Buxtehude, and Stade are currently impossible. the Bahn spokesperson said the fire had damaged the rail infrastructure – the distribution box is required for the safe control of trains. According to reports, this fire damaged signal cables, and train traffic was therefore halted.
