Sweden's Patent and Market Court in Stockholm ordered Google on Wednesday to pay approximately €1.3 billion in damages to the price comparison portal PriceRunner, which has belonged to Swedish payment service provider Klarna since 2022.

PriceRunner had sued Google in 2022 for around €2.1 billion, though in the proceedings before the Patent och marknadsdomstolen in Stockholm it had originally sought just under seven billion euros (78 billion Swedish kronor) in damages, according to the news agency TT. The court rejected the bulk of the claim and awarded only a fraction of the amount sought. Nevertheless, according to Judge Linda Kullberg, this is the highest damages award ever granted in a Swedish competition case. Kullberg said in a statement: "Der nun zugeteilte Schadenersatz sei dennoch der höchste, der in einem schwedischen Wettbewerbsverfahren je zugesprochen wurde."
