Telekom secures TV rights to the 2030 FIFA World Cup and expands MagentaTV as a football platform

The role of ARD and ZDF

For the 2028 European Championship, Telekom is already the only provider to have all matches in its lineup, according to the company. For the 2030 World Cup as well, the group plans a comparable model, according to its own statements. The public broadcasters ARD and ZDF had also expressed interest in the broadcast rights to the 2030 World Cup. As was already the case for the 2028 European Championship and the 2022 and 2026 World Cups, a sublicensing arrangement with ARD and ZDF is conceivable.

For the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, Telekom had already shown numerous matches exclusively on MagentaTV. A total of 44 matches, including two quarterfinals, were broadcast there. For the TV rights to the 2026 World Cup, the group had likewise granted sublicenses to the free-to-air broadcasters ARD and ZDF, so that selected encounters remained freely receivable. A similar model is conceivable for the 2030 World Cup, according to Telekom.

Lessons from the 2026 World Cup

Diehl described the agreement as a milestone for the platform. "MagentaTV is the home of first-class live sports - today and in the future!" he said. This underscores the group's ambition to play a central role in the German sports broadcasting market over the long term with MagentaTV.

For the 2026 World Cup, Telekom relied on a prominent team of experts. In addition to other specialists, Thomas Müller, Mats Hummels, and the designated national team coach Jürgen Klopp were part of the lineup. This configuration illustrates the company's ambition to enrich the broadcasts with additional expertise and entertainment alongside the actual match action.

Even in the run-up to the 2026 World Cup finals, Telekom had already gained experience with its own broadcasts. At two previous European Championships, MagentaTV had shown matches exclusively, before the group acquired the rights for the 2026 World Cup. The agreement now signed for 2030 extends this strategy and binds the next two major tournaments to the platform.

Outlook on the 2030 World Cup

Analysts rated the news situation surrounding Deutsche Telekom predominantly positively. UBS rated the stock as "Buy" on 30.06.26, followed by Barclays Capital with "Overweight" on 02.07.26. JP Chase & Co. also rated the stock as "Overweight" on 10.07.26. The group is headquartered in Bonn and is one of the largest telecommunications providers in Europe.

With the acquisition of the 2030 World Cup rights, Telekom is continuing its course of positioning live sports as a core content offering of MagentaTV. The step comes against the backdrop of increasing competition in the German TV market, in which streaming services and traditional free-to-air broadcasters compete for broadcast rights. By bundling major tournaments on a single platform, the group aims, according to its own statements, both to attract paying subscribers and to secure reach in free-to-air television through sublicenses.

It remains to be seen how exactly the distribution of matches between MagentaTV and the public broadcasters will play out for the 2030 World Cup. Telekom has, however, already announced that a sublicensing model comparable to that used for the 2028 European Championship is conceivable. This means that selected matches, possibly including games involving the German national team, could once again be available free-to-air on ARD and ZDF.
