London, 23 June 2026

On the tenth anniversary of the Brexit referendum of 23 June 2016, a stocktaking shows that Britain is economically weakened, politically unstable, and deeply divided over the question of re-entering the EU.

On 23 June 2016, the British voted 52 to 48 percent in favour of leaving the European Union. The result was announced the following morning by BBC presenter David Dimbleby, who has since looked back on the event himself: "The British people have spoken and the answer is, we're out". The formal withdrawal took place on 31 January 2020. Ten years after the vote, however, the balance sheet is largely sobering, as an evaluation by the news agency APA shows.
