The education agency of the U.S. state of Texas has added the Bible to the mandatory reading list for students, a move that the civil rights organization Americans United for Separation of Church and State sharply criticizes and intends to challenge in court.

The decision by the Texas education agency was made on a Friday and was initially picked up by U.S. media. The Austrian Catholic news agency Kathpress reported on the matter the following Sunday. Specifically, the reading list for classroom instruction was expanded to include the Bible. As a result, students will in future be regularly confronted with texts from the book.

In justification, the responsible education officials said, according to Kathpress, that the Bible is „die Bibel als unverzichtbares literarisches Werk, das für das Verständnis der amerikanischen Gründungsgeschichte und Kultur von Bedeutung". They see the work as a central key to understanding the cultural and historical roots of the United States.
