"A future-proof pension needs more employment, more contributors and solid financing — not endless new promises at the expense of the younger generation," Kampeter said in a written statement.

The exchange highlights long-running tensions within the coalition over the so-called Rentenpaket, the package of pension measures the government has been negotiating since the commission concluded its work. While the Union has signalled openness to adjustments in contribution levels and tax relief for younger savers, the SPD has so far resisted any rollback of early retirement entitlements.

Local leaders warn of cost-shifting to municipalities

Officials from Bremen, including mayor Bovenschulte, have publicly urged the federal government to re-evaluate plans that would shift costs onto municipalities. Local leaders fear that combining the abolition of the 'Rente mit 63' with tighter eligibility for disability pensions could swell the ranks of people claiming basic welfare support, a cost borne largely by city budgets.

Behind the political signal lies a fiscal arithmetic that has hardened since the previous reform round. Germany's contribution rate is projected to climb above the statutory ceiling without offsetting measures, and the ratio of contributors to pensioners is forecast to fall further as the post-war baby-boom cohort moves into retirement in the second half of the decade.

Demographic arithmetic behind the dispute

Advocates of reform argue that phasing out the early retirement route would keep experienced workers in the labour market for longer, helping to ease documented shortages in construction, healthcare and skilled trades.
