Three Dead in the Marchfeld Canal: Search Operation Near Gerasdorf

The three dead were, according to initial information, young men from Vienna aged 27 and 28. According to the information, they had already been considered missing for several days. The mother of one of the 27-year-olds had previously filed a missing persons report with the police in Vienna, according to the fire department, after which the search was initiated.

Dangers at the Marchfeld Canal

The emergency services pointed out the particular dangers at the Marchfeld Canal. A warning states: „Bei der Durchfahrt besteht Lebensgefahr, da starke Unterströmungen, Walzenbildungen und unvorhersehbare Wasserbewegungen auftreten. Boote, Kanus oder Kajaks können durch Strömungen erfasst, beschädigt oder zum Kentern gebracht werden!" The warning was explicitly directed at water sports enthusiasts such as stand-up paddlers.

The Marchfeld Canal runs through the Gorneuburg district in the north of Vienna and is popular among recreational athletes. At the same time, it is known to be dangerous due to its technical water structures and weirs. The weir in the area of Seyringer Straße near Gerasdorf had already been the scene of search and rescue operations in the past.

The police have launched investigations into the exact cause of death and the circumstances of the incident.
