Brussels, 12 June 2026
Tightened European Union asylum rules took effect at midnight on 12 June 2026, while Germany's federal interior ministry confirmed that temporary checks at the country's land borders will continue until at least 15 September.
The new Common European Asylum System, known by its German acronym GEAS, introduces stricter procedures for processing asylum applications across the EU's member states. According to the federal interior ministry, the measures now in force represent the most significant reform of the bloc's asylum framework in years. Officials in Brussels have framed the package as a way to speed up decisions and to clarify which country is responsible for examining an individual claim.
