During a tour of Vienna Airport, Agriculture Minister Norbert Totschnig (ÖVP), together with State Secretary Barbara Eibinger-Miedl (ÖVP), warned about souvenirs from third countries because they pose a risk to nature, agriculture and forestry.
In the first half of 2026, customs at Vienna Airport alone seized around three tonnes of fresh fruit, vegetables, plants and cut flowers. In the first half of the year, particular attention was drawn by the discovery of seven live monitor lizards and 150 dead seahorses. Overall, customs at Vienna Airport conduct over 5,000 checks per year out of fewer than 32 million travelers in passenger traffic.
