After the discovery of bodies and debris in the Atlantic off the Canary Islands, authorities assume that more than 80 migrants have died. Caminando Fronteras, a Spanish non-governmental organization that specializes in monitoring the Atlantic route, said on Wednesday that the people had likely perished while attempting to reach the Canary Islands from West Africa. The exact number of victims can currently only be estimated because recovery operations are ongoing.
