The Trento Public Prosecutor's Office has, as part of the so-called "Romeo" affair, indicted René Benko, the founder of the Signa Group, along with 36 other individuals on charges of forming a mafia-type criminal association.

The prosecution accuses Benko and the co-defendants of having built a network founded with the aim of obtaining concessions and permits through improper means and thereby generating unjustified profits. Specifically, investigators suspect Benko of being the "leader of a mafia-type criminal association." Under Italian law, this charge falls into a particularly serious category of offense, which can also apply when the structures do not correspond to those of traditional organized crime.
