Trial over group attack in Vienna's Wasserpark: Witnesses can barely remember

The indictment is based on the statements of the four injured parties as well as investigations that, according to the victims, point to a significantly larger group of attackers numbering 20 to 30 men of Syrian origin. Of these, 20 individuals managed to flee and have not yet been identified. An 18-year-old witness, who stated that he had been held down and beaten by four masked men with brass knuckles and stabbed in the left thigh, testified: "I don't know a single one of them."

Witness statements

In court, the same witness explained that he could "remember little." After the first punch to the face, he was so dazed that "I didn't really notice what was happening." When confronted with his earlier statements, he explained: "I was scared at the time and was in shock." Today, however, he is "certain that I no longer recognize all of them." Another 18-year-old claimed that he had only seen three of the ten accused in the park.

The presiding judge explicitly asked the witnesses whether they had been threatened or pressured beforehand. The indictment also alleges that prior to the incident, there had been an "insult to honor" between one of the victims and the ringleader of a Syrian group, who is said to have been known through TikTok videos. A remark that they would "settle this outside the courtroom" is also alleged, with a knife said to be hidden nearby.

Role of the defendants

According to reports, some of the defendants claim they went out of curiosity because they had heard about a "problem." The prosecution accuses the ten men variously of primary participation, mere contributory acts, or attempts. The proceedings are scheduled to continue until the end of July, with some of the accused facing only charges of attempted or subordinate involvement.

Outside Courtroom 312 at the Regional Criminal Court on Tuesday, around 30 young men were waiting, including friends and family members of the defendants. The proceedings are being led by the public prosecutor's office with the participation of prosecutor Christina Salzborn, according to the available reports. The investigations had previously also been accompanied by WEGA and the APA.

Impact on the proceedings

The attack in November 2025 caused a stir in Vienna-Floridsdorf, as it is being discussed as an example of a growing number of group-related violent incidents among young men in the city. The taking of evidence is currently focused primarily on the question of whether the witnesses' memory gaps are attributable to the trauma at the time or to possible pressure from the defendants' circle.

Legal experts point out that gaps in credibility in witness testimony can make convictions more difficult, particularly in group proceedings. The defense is likely to use the contradictory statements to call into question the identification of the perpetrators. The court announced that questioning would continue on the upcoming hearing days and that further witnesses would be summoned.

The security situation around the trial has been heightened, partly because a large part of the accused's circle of acquaintances is present in the courthouse. The responsible authorities are also examining whether there are indications of further accomplices who have not yet been identified. Should the verdict include guilty findings, this would send a signal for the criminal prosecution of organized group violence in Vienna.
