According to Trump, the allegedly released, previously secret documents are said to prove that US vote-counting systems are vulnerable to interference by China and Russia. According to intelligence findings, China had assigned a special unit for data analysis for this operation, Trump continued. Trump announced that he would declassify and publish the documents.

This is not the first time Trump has delivered such an address to the public. Back in December 2020, he had already defended his economic policy in a comparable address to the nation – at a time when he was already under considerable domestic political pressure. Even then, he picked up the narrative of alleged election fraud.

Repetition of the Fraud Narrative

In terms of content, Trump picked up on conspiracy narratives about the 2020 election. US media had reported in advance that he could revisit the loss of the 2020 presidential election. It was conceivable that Trump would take up conspiracy narratives about the election, which Democrat Joe Biden had won. In fact, he repeated the unfounded claims of election fraud.

The claims are not new. He and many of his allies have repeatedly promoted the narrative that there was fraud in the election. However, these allegations have been demonstrably proven false.

No Confirmation from US Authorities to Date

Democrat Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election; Trump has still not conceded his defeat to this day. Independent election auditors, courts, and agencies have found no evidence of systematic election fraud that could have changed the outcome.

Observers assess the speech as another attempt to draw attention to the 2020 election defeat. Trump combined the foreign policy announcement about alleged data thefts with domestic political narratives, without presenting concrete evidence for the severity of the alleged manipulation.

Reactions from Washington and from abroad were still pending at the time of the speech. China has not publicly commented on the allegations to date. Nor had there been any confirmation from the US intelligence services for the findings presented by Trump prior to the speech.
