Washington, August 20, 2026

US President Donald Trump has announced that he intends to hold a personal meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in the current year, in order to get the stalled negotiations over North Korea's nuclear program moving again.

What is the announced meeting about?

Trump said on Tuesday in Washington that he is planning the meeting with Kim Jong-un before the end of the year. Neither the location nor the date has been set so far, but they are in direct contact with Pyongyang, it was said from the President's circle. The date will be announced as soon as both sides have reached an agreement.

The announcement comes at a time when diplomatic relations between the US and North Korea have been at a standstill for years. The earlier direct encounters between Trump and Kim – including the historic meeting in Singapore in 2018 and the talks in Hanoi and at the inter-Korean border – had not produced a lasting solution to the North Korean nuclear program. Trump is nevertheless once again placing his bets on the format of personal meetings.
