Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean ruler Kim Jong Un, has declared North Korea's status as a nuclear-weapons state non-negotiable and irreversible, just ahead of the announced state visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Pyongyang.
The statement was disseminated through the state news agency KCNA and is directed against all diplomatic efforts aimed at the nuclear disarmament of North Korea. Kim Yo Jong, 38, who is regarded as an influential adviser to her brother, formulated North Korea's position with unusual sharpness.
She spoke of an "irreversible reality - regardless of whether others acknowledge it or not" and called on hostile forces to abandon their "daydreams of denuclearization." With this choice of words, she primarily rejected the US and its allies, which have for years pressed for the complete nuclear disarmament of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
