Beijing, May 13, 2026
US President Donald Trump began official talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing on Wednesday, marking his first visit since 2017. The discussions focused on the Iran conflict and the country's uranium enrichment.
Background of the Talks
Diplomatic relations between the US and China have been strained in recent years, particularly over the Iran conflict. Ahead of the trip, Trump downplayed differences with Xi and emphasized the importance of cooperation. "China is ready to work with the United States to enhance cooperation and manage differences," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun on Wednesday.
A key point of contention is how to handle Iran's controversial nuclear program, which possesses approximately 440 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 percent. This could potentially be further processed to build multiple nuclear weapons.
