Meeting at the White House
US President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson welcomed leaders of major US technology companies at the White House on Tuesday for consultations on a possible regulation of Artificial Intelligence. According to the White House, the meeting was intended to serve as an informal exchange about the future treatment of AI technology. Reportedly invited were leading figures from companies that are significantly involved in the development of large AI models in the USA. These reportedly include, among others, representatives from ChatGPT developer OpenAI as well as the AI specialist Anthropic, including its head Dario Amodei. Other companies based in Silicon Valley also sent senior managers to the capital.
The central question of the talks was whether and how the US government should intervene in the market for Artificial Intelligence. The background is a growing debate about the risks and side effects of the technology, such as the spread of manipulated content, the distortion of election information, and concerns about an arms race with China in the area of AI models.
