Trump presents renovation of Lincoln Memorial Pool as complete – lawsuit and cost debate continue

The figures also diverge when it comes to costs. Trump had estimated the original repair costs at $1.8 million (around 1.5 million euros) and described the actual expenses as a "small fraction of the costs" of previous administrations. The New York Times, on the other hand, reported that the costs had risen to seven times the original estimate shortly before completion. Current media reports cite an amount of over $13.1 million – almost nine times what Trump had stated.

At the press conference, Trump did not want to commit to a specific final sum. The gap between the originally mentioned sum and the recently circulating estimates is a topic in Washington and is likely to further fuel the legal dispute. Observers interpret the silence on the final costs as an indication that the administration wants to avoid precise figures as long as the lawsuit is ongoing.

In parallel with the construction work, the independent foundation The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF) had filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of the Interior. The organization accuses Trump of having destroyed the "historic character" of the pool "without adhering to the procedures prescribed by Congress." The lawsuit is therefore directed against the circumvention of formal review procedures and the responsible authorities. However, the proceedings did not stop the project: the renovation was continued despite the ongoing legal dispute and is now reported as complete.

The pool is a landmark of the U.S. capital and a popular photo motif, reflecting the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. The blue paint job deliberately breaks with the traditional gray appearance of the reflecting pool and is part of a series of redesigns in Washington with which Trump intends to visibly reshape the city. According to reports, he is having several locations in the capital redesigned to create a monument to his presidency.

Part of a Larger Redesign of Washington

For example, according to sources, he had the historic East Wing of the White House demolished to build a ballroom in its place. Trump also plans a giant triumphal arch that, according to facts, will be almost three times as high as the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin and one and a half times as high as the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. The redesign of the pool fits into these plans and is seen by critics as another step towards the political appropriation of the cityscape.

In Washington itself, the reaction to the completion is divided. Trump's supporters celebrate the blue paint job and the fast construction time as proof of his ability to act. Opponents point to the failure to fix the leak, the increased costs, and the ongoing lawsuit. Until the water is let into the pool and TCLF pursues its legal dispute further, the symbolic and political dispute over the national symbol remains open for the time being.
