President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Iran shot down a U.S. Apache helicopter patrolling the Strait of Hormuz overnight, and that the United States "must" respond to the attack.
What Trump said
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he had been informed by the U.S. military that "last night the Iranians shot down one of our highly sophisticated Apache Helicopters while patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz." He added: "Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack." The president said the two pilots aboard the aircraft were "unharmed and safe."
The downing, which Trump said occurred overnight before his Tuesday statement, comes against a fragile diplomatic backdrop. A truce in the war in the Gulf was announced on April 8, and on Monday Israel and Iran said they would halt attacks on each other after an appeal by Trump to end their first direct exchanges of fire since April. Both sides have continued peace talks despite several flare-ups in the region, though Tehran has warned it would resume hostilities if Israel continued to attack its ally Hezbollah in Lebanon.
