Washington, 29 June 2026

The United States and Iran agreed on Sunday evening to halt attacks in the Gulf and restart negotiations over the Strait of Hormuz, ending four days of renewed hostilities that had threatened a less-than-two-week-old ceasefire.

Washington and Tehran announced the pause after a weekend of mutual recriminations and strikes that had called into question the June 17 memorandum of understanding. According to a U.S. official cited by Axios, both sides will "stand down for now" and allow commercial vessels to move through the strategic waterway that carries a significant share of global oil shipments.

Technical talks on the June 17 memorandum of understanding are expected to resume this week, with negotiations set to continue in Qatar. The location reflects Qatar's role as a longstanding mediator between the United States and Iran, most recently during the indirect exchanges that produced the original ceasefire earlier this month.
