President Trump signed a long-delayed executive order on artificial intelligence on Tuesday that asks AI developers to voluntarily submit their most powerful models for government testing no more than 30 days before public release, scaling back an earlier draft that had proposed a 90-day review window.

The order, signed at the White House, was originally expected to be completed last month but was held up as administration officials debated how far the federal government should go in policing the technology. According to people familiar with the discussions, the White House scrapped an earlier signing plan over concerns that the order would interfere with AI innovation. Trump himself had expressed worry that strong federal action could stifle American companies' lead in the global AI race amid competitive pressure from China.
