Atlanta, 30 June 2026

England manager Thomas Tuchel has, ahead of Tuesday's World Cup round of 16 match against DR Congo (6:00 p.m., ARD and MagentaTV), highlighted the years of penalty shootout training conducted by the English Football Association while simultaneously acknowledging that simulating the pressure of a shootout is difficult.

The 52-year-old said on the sidelines of preparation at the Atlanta stadium: "It's hard to simulate the pressure. The Association has a programme for that, which we follow down to the smallest detail." With this statement, Tuchel referred to a concept that the FA, according to its own account, launched some eight years ago to improve the performances of English national teams.

The manager also described in Atlanta what the programme essentially looks like: "They consulted experts for this and developed special training exercises. These create set routines for the decisive moment, including the right breathing technique." The training accordingly ranges from clear routines and targeted exercises to conscious breath control.
